TITLE:  Mallard duck about to grab newly-fledged juvenile Sand Martin on stony ground

INFO: "The same day as the previous image. I'd stayed in the hide to have lunch during which time very little was happening, most of the Sand Martins having been dispersed by the passing through earlier of both Sparrowhawk and Hobby.

I had just packed up my gear and was about to leave when I saw the Mallard duck on the shore in front of the hide eating another juvenile Sand Martin on the shore, which I pointed out to a couple of visitors to the hide. Again, the duck took several minutes to swallow down the corpse. Just as it did so I saw it look with interest further along to the left of the shore and I noticed that there was a just-fledged juvenile Sand Martin sat on the ground.

The Mallard jumped into the water and started to swim the few metres round past the front of the hide toward the martin. I saw straight away what was about to happen so, since the camera and lens had already been fitted to my tripod, I quickly set up it up and focused in on the martin just as the duck came on shore and approached it (next image)."
