| "Two frames on from the previous image (at 8fps) and the autofocus has just managed to keep up and so have I! - fortunately the two Coots have changed direction again and are parallel to camera so both are in the plane of focus. This kind of action is usually fast, frenetic and brief - this entire chase lasted just two seconds - so it's often a case of keeping subjects in frame and fire away.
When shooting Coot chases and fights, it's a good idea to allow space within the frame for their movement, and for their flapping wings and the splashes - it also makes it a bit easier to keep them in frame. A great advantage with zoom lenses is that one can zoom out if they head towards camera, though these two were far enough out that I didn't need to zoom out. I was going to crop in more to just the two birds but liked the splashes so cropped to this longer letterbox-format - lucky to get such good poses of both birds."
