TITLE: Bittern on alert

INFO: "This is the same (north) Bittern as in the previous image. After spending a few minutes mooching about right in front of the hide, he made his way to the right past the front of the hide (mostly hidden by foreground vegetation) and then suddenly popped up to the south of the hide, in the wooded swampy area.

I just about got to the south window in time to grab a couple of shots as he stood in alert pose, partially obscured by a foreground mossy tree trunk. Poor light under the trees so lens VR (Vibration Reduction) on to help steady the hand-held lens at the relatively low shutter speed.

Shortly after this shot, he walked quickly (too quickly!) across a part-submerged tree trunk to the main reedbed and disappeared from view. Suddenly, there was a commotion and a flurry of wings and he was chased out by another Bittern! - presumably the south Bittern, which nobody had seen yet. Of course, the overcast conditions meant just not enough light for fast shutter speed to stop the action.

The (north) Bittern flew back across the front of the hide and into the edge of the main reedbed to left of the hide, and the (south) Bittern disappeared back into its own reedbed."
