TITLE: Bittern standing alert on half-submerged tree trunk
INFO: "Same morning as previous image and just a few minutes later when this second Bittern to the right (south) of the hide also put in an appearance, walking out from the reedbed along this mossy half-submerged tree trunk. Fortunately, (s)he decided to turn and pause a while, and then assumed this elegant sky-pointing alert pose, likely because (s)he'd seen the other (north) Bittern. It's not quite the classic 'bitterning' pose, more a 'semi', but very elegant and photogenic nevertheless. I had to shoot over the shoulders of two other seated photographers which meant hand-holding the heavy lens so I opted to use VR (Vibration Reduction) to help counteract my weak and trembling arms..." February 2012 (Ivy North Hide) TECH: Nikon D700, Nikkor 200-400mm f4 zoom lens at 400mm with 1.4x teleconverter, ISO 1600, f8, 1/500 sec. Lens hand-held, VR on. Cropped image about 75% of frame (from full-frame FX-format image). |
