TITLE: Bittern in semi-alert pose hidden in reeds
INFO: "A few days later from the previous image and another try for Bittern from Ivy North Hide. This image shows how well the Bittern blends in with its reed habitat, not just by its cryptic colouration but also by its behaviour - when on alert the Bittern stretches up its neck which makes it even more difficult to see. Here the Bittern's body is quite clear to see and it has stretched up only slightly, but it's head is very difficult see - you may just be able to make out its head/throat and its beak pointing skywards. I've cropped in quite a bit for web display otherwise the Bittern's camouflage would work just too well! As usual, this Bittern crossed the north channel a couple of times at the usual place and in the usual pose (!) and spent most of its time well hidden in the densest part of the main reedbed...." February 2011 TECH: Nikon D700, Nikkor 200-400mm f4 zoom lens at 400mm with 1.4x teleconverter, ISO 2500, f8, 1/1500 sec. Hide shelf platform with bean-bag. Cropped image about 40% of frame. |
