TITLE: Bittern in shallow water between reeds
INFO: "A few days on from the previous images and I'd returned to Ivy North Hide first thing in the day to try for more Bittern shots. Well, there was no sight nor sound of Bittern anywhere all morning.... very disappoining as the light was lovely early on, but by late morning the calm conditions meant that already heat shimmer from the vegetation around the hide had become an issue. So I went for a wander to the other hides. Just after midday, with a freshening easterly breeze that would reduce heat shimmer, I returned to Ivy North Hide for another look-see and found the north Bittern was showing right in front of the north window. By now the hide had become a bit busier, with a few photographers already in situ at the north window so I had to shoot over their shoulders, hand-holding the heavy lens. The Bittern 'performed' well close in for the best part of an hour as it walked around looking for fish (though with the usual photographic problems of foreground Reedmace stems), and this image shows it in quite a nice pose in the bright sunshine." March 2012 (Ivy North Hide) TECH: Nikon D700, Nikkor 200-400mm f4 zoom lens at 400mm, ISO 500, f5.6, 1/1500 sec. Lens hand-held. Cropped image about 25% of frame (from full-frame FX-format image). |
