TITLE: | Bittern between reeds looking for fish
|
INFO: | Same Bittern as previous image.
The bird began to look for fish around the edges of the patchy reeds towards the front of the hide. I carefully leant out of the window a little to get an angle on it for this final image before it moved too far to the front of the hide. I was still shooting in upright format and unable to quickly change, so this image cropped in quite a bit from vertical framing. Losing light and shutter speed by now, but grateful that the warden was late closing up the hide and I'd had an extra thirty minutes beyond the official closing time which allowed me to get these shots. Whilst waiting to be 'chucked out' of the hide, I spent the time just watching through the dark one-way windows as the Bittern looked for fish - it's wonderful to get such close views of this quite secretive bird and to watch its natural behaviour. I also used my compact digital camera to shoot a brief 'memory' video of the bird through the windows as the dark tint of the glass didn't seem to affect the quality too much - see the video link thumbnail."
