TITLE: | Coot running over calm water
|
INFO: | "Same morning as previous image but a couple of hours later with not much more bird photography during that time, frustrating as the water remained millpond calm....
Another Coot in the bay decided it didn't like one that was right in front of the hide and began a long flapping-pattering run in from quite a long way out (50 metres!) so that it was easy to get onto him early and track him in, shooting once he'd got closer in. Good autofocus lock-on and I did a reasonable job of tracking to allow the AF to do its job, zooming out slightly as the bird got nearer. I knew from experience that good wing and leg positions for water-running Coots are pretty much down to luck so I fired away almost non-stop as he came closer in, taking in all about twenty frames in succession during the four-second run-in. Only a couple were just off-focus and most had odd wing/leg positions but this one not only had good focus but also good wing and leg positions, and a reasonable reflection too. Was hoping that another fight would ensue but not on this occasion, the other bird scarpered rapidly!" May 2012 (Goosander Hide) |
