TITLE: Moorhen walking over frozen water
INFO: "A sunny but cold morning in early February and a visit to the Ivy North Hide to check for Bittern. The water between the reeds was frozen over, which extended some 20m or more out into the lake. Only fleeting glimpses of Bittern in the three hours or so that I was in the hide, so other subjects filled in such as this Moorhen which trotted across part of the frozen water between the reedbeds. The rather dynamic pose of the bird is because it heard the noise of the camera as I started shooting and it was just on the verge of breaking into a flapping run. It made me laugh when it did run because its legs skidded on the ice like one of those cartoons." February 2012 (Ivy North Hide) TECH: Nikon D700, Nikkor 200-400mm f4 zoom lens at 400mm with 1.4x teleconverter, ISO 1600, f8, 1/1000 sec. Lens rested on hide window sill. Cropped image about 50% of frame (from horizontal full-frame FX-format image). |
