TITLE:  Moorhen in flight

INFO: "Early into Goosander Hide with prospect of good conditions with light winds and calm water, and still after the shot of Sparrowhawk chasing Sand Martin over the water.

Very quiet to start with and almost no Sand Martins around, so I guess the Sparrowhawk had already been through and spooked them away.

Early on I'd seen a Moorhen fly out quite high from bushes to the right of the hide and across to behind the old pontoon jetty but hadn't been quick enough to get onto it. A little while later though it suddenly flew back out, quite high again, and I quickly swung onto it and got a few shots as it flapped in rapid descent (they're not very good or elegant fliers!) to land in the calm water with a loud splat (next image).

This is the best shot of the short series in terms of wing position (Moorhens rarely seem to look very neat when in flight and this one is no exception) but the big yellow feet look good!"
