TITLE: Moorhen landing on calm water with reflection
INFO: "A couple of months on from the previous image and another morning with great light and lovely calm water in front of Goosander Hide, this time almost mirror-calm, so the chance to get some images with really good reflections. This Moorhen appeared quite far out and so I was not tracking it at the time but when it took off and flew in obliquely towards the hide I had plenty of time to get on to it, get good autofocus lock-on and then track it in, zooming out a bit as it came closer. Fortunately it decided to land on the water reasonably close in to the hide and I fired away as it was about to splashdown, dragging its feet across the smooth water surface as it did so before body-surfing to a stop. This image I think is the best of the two feet-dragging shots I got, the bird just lifting those large yellow feet up to its body prior to surfing on its chest, with good wing and feet positions, and a pretty good reflection. There were a few bits on the water surface which I retouched out to give a 'cleaner' image." July 2012 (Goosander Hide) TECH: Nikon D700, Nikkor 200-400mm f4 zoom lens at 330mm, ISO 1000, f5.6, 1/3000 sec. Hide shelf platform with ball head. Cropped image about 20% of frame from horizontal full-frame FX-format image. |
