TITLE:
| Bittern walking across reeds
|
INFO:
| Following on from the previous images, this is that other Bittern.
Having chased off the bird in the previous images, this one continued on and made its way towards the front of the hide. I was still just able to get an angle on it shooting from the south opening window to get this interesting shot of it actually walking through/over the patchy reeds and above the water - this is where those overly large feet and claws show their usefulness as the bird uses them to grab bunches of reed stems to support its weight. This is how they traverse the denser reedbed, but the amazing thing is that they seem able to do this with very little noise or disturbance of the reeds.
I was still shooting in upright format and unable to quickly change, so this image cropped from vertical framing. Light levels continuing to fall but just a fast enough shutter speed to arrest the bird's movement."
